Quite simply it’s a “buzzword”, marketing-speak if you will, the kind of jargon that those who are not ‘in the know’ use, in order to appear to be ‘in the know’… So how did it become a well-known term? and when you ask your agency for a Web 2.0 project, how will you know if they deliver it?
So what is Web 2.0? Simply put, Web 2.0 is a perceived transition of the web to web applications. Web 2.0 is the next generation of technology solutions where interactive content is the norm. There is no agreement on exactly what Web 2.0 means, (depending on who you are speaking with, you may receive different explanations). But at it’s heart, Web 2.0 is about the maturity of the Web and businesses that are thriving online.
It’s quite easy to list the technologies employed by sites that are Web 2.0 (XHTML, CSS2, RSS feeds and Ajax) and pretend that these are what makes the difference between Web 1.0 and 2.0 – but these don’t define the term, rather they just help it achieve it’s aims.
To put it simply, What is Web 2.0? – It is an easier Internet.
