We have a reasonable sized ‘green area’ to the rear of our house. I hesitate to call it a “lawn” as we also have 3 large dogs, 2 of which enjoy digging. It’s probably not that surprising then, that turning this patch into a beautifully manicured ‘bowling green’ is an unlikely target.

Over the last three years, I’ve tried a plethora of different lawnmowers. The first was an electric rotary (good, but required unblocking every few minutes), next was a Flymo (useless), and finally an electric cylinder mower. This latter would have been perfect for maintaining an already perfect lawn, but it surrendered when faced with the hole-ridden ‘Battle of the Somme’ in miniature that we call a garden.

So earlier today, I bit the bullet and invested a significant sum in a new Honda petrol-driven monster – a solid machine that’s built to last, by a company with a great reputation for quality engineering. Unsurprisingly, it’s just scythed it’s way around the garden like a hot knife through butter.

Why did I not do this before?

In business, we’re faced with exactly the same issues. Some clients come to us wanting an inexpensive static site, that will be fine for a while. Of course once that gets outdated, they need to find more budget to repeat the process.

Normally by the time they come to needing the third or fourth version of their sites, they’ve already spent more than a bespoke CMS solution would have cost, and are starting to see the ROI reasons for having one!

Good quality petrol lawnmowers are not cheap – neither is a good website Content Management System. But once the initial purchase price is out of the way, then the rewards soon start flowing in. In my case that means a chilled bottle of Oyster Bay, whilst I survey the grounds and a job well done. What will it be for your business?
