In difficult times, it helps to make sure that your company website makes it onto the first page of Google, Yahoo and MSN. There are some very simple methods for making sure you’re not getting beaten by companies with inferior products or services, but better SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) techniques.

I’ve listed below the five easiest and most effective checks you can do to make sure you’re at the top of the search engines. If you haven’t done so already, decide on the keywords you want to appear in the search listings (a good tip here is to see which keywords your competitors are using, and ‘borrow’ them if they’re listing is above yours!) and then make sure you’ve ticked off each of the following:

    •     Include your keywords within the title tag of the window (that’s the text in the very top of the browser window).

    •     Keywords in the URL are another must. If you sell rocket widgets then the URL to the relevant page should read: www.domain.com/rocket-widgets.html

    •     Ensure your keywords are included in headings and within the body of the text too. Having the keywords in the first paragraph is a big plus.

    •     Emphasise the keywords. Making them bold or italic all helps Google understand what your site is all about.

    •     Site accessibility. Make sure the text is ‘readable’ by Google and not embedded into graphics. Can you select all the text in your page with your cursor? If you can’t select it, Googlecan’t read it!

Take a look at your website now to see if you’re using these fast and simple techniques, and if not, then you know who to call!
