Most people can remember back to a ‘retail milestone’. For me it was the first time I ordered a book from someplace named after a river, or shopped at Tesco without having to leave the house. Some of my fellow (read: older) contributors may remember when Jack Cohen first got involved in groceries, or the opening of a Woolworths in their town… But one thing’s for sure, sooner or later, most companies will start using the web to sell and market their products.

Of course one of the most difficult decisions is “How?”. Do we invest thousands in building our own shop, or just set up an ebay marketplace? Well whatever you decide, if you want to get the revenue flowing in, then you’re going to need a method to process those payments… And that’s where Magento comes in.

There are many Open Source shopping carts available, osCommerce, Zen Cart, CRE Loaded to name but a few, but Magento is the new kid on the block, and it’s rich features list is making all the others look amateur. We’ve just completed our first Magento installation and it really is a superb system. If you’re thinking about online sales then you should first head over to the official Magento site http://www.magentocommerce.com/ to find out more, then get in touch to see how we can turn your site into the next big revenue stream!
